Technical Editors: What Comes to Mind?

What comes to mind when we hear the term 'technical editor'? Personally, I hadn't given it much thought. It's not a term that has come across my radar very much since signing up for this class in November (which seems so much longer ago than it actually is after the blur of finals and five weeks of winter break). Additionally, I cannot recall seeing a television, film or pop culture character with the occupation of technical editor, maybe because most people don't know what they are and would rather watch shows about police officers, realtors, chefs etc. People who we assume we already know something about because we are familiar, to some degree, with what these jobs entail. So working solely off the label of 'technical editor,' who would I assume this person is? When I think of an editor, the classic newspaper or magazine figure comes to mind. Someone who takes something written by someone else and works out the errors so it's ready for the public. Since newspaper and magazines are becoming less and less popular as they give way to online news and entertainment platforms, I would be tempted to think of an editor as someone older. However, when you throw the word 'technical' in the mix, and the story (in my head) changes completely. Technology conjures up the image of a young professional, probably someone who's more left-brained and less interested in creative pursuits. So I suppose, after thinking about it for a moment, that my impression of a technical editor, without researching what they actually do or where they work, is a young person who knows a lot about science or technology and works out of a trendy office.

  1. It's fascinating how age is a feature in your view of conventional and contemporary editors. I can see how the word "technical" may be confusing. Do Rude & Eaton help clarify in the Ch 1 and Ch 2 readings? How?

Also, consider vitalizing your posts with images (to create an immediate tone and draw readerly interest), hyperlinks (for definitions and examples), and maybe consider embedding videos!
